Queue or Stand in Line

QUEUE OR STAND IN LINE

Is it precise enough to say 'queue' or 'stand in line' as a system? What I would like to take as an example is a queue system or stand in line system I have ever experienced when having a queue in a bank. Every time I go to a bank I have to have a queue number. All bank customers have to take a queue number. A bank security will greet us in front of bank door and offers help.

"Good morning, may I help you", the bank security greets the customers. After telling what kind of bank service I need, the bank security will guide me how to take a queue number. If I want to go to a customer service, I have to press customer service button on numbering machine. The queue number will be shown on a piece of paper. I have to keep it until my number is called. That is why I have to memorize the queue number.

Queuing in a bank is not so boring. The waiting room is very comfortable. It is equipped by well maintained air conditioning. The room is also very clean. Smokers are not allowed here. If I like it, I can watch television, just to kill the time of waiting. The cleaning service boy or girl is always ready to sweeps away every unneeded thing appears in the waiting room.

Back to the question I have above about queue system. In my opinion queue is a system. What is a system? CALD, Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary (2003), defines 'a system is connected items working together. What items are existing in a bank queue system? The most important one is in this case bank officers and customers, rule,  and queue number. The customers without queue numbers will not be considered. They will not be called until they have queue numbers.

The waiting room in a certain bank is equipped by some seats. The customers can sit here before being called based on their numbers. But in fact not all banks provide seats for the customers. It means that the customers have to queue by standing. Here the term 'stand in line' becomes easy to understand than "queue". It seems that here the bank wants to apply the term "stand in line" in a simple way without using the term "queue". If we use the word "stand in line" instead of "queue", it will be easier for us to understand it that to have queue means to stand in line - we have to stand in line, not to sit in line.

The word "queue" itself becomes too difficult to pronounce. Its spelling is difficult to memorize. In the same meaning, the word "stand in line" is much easier to understand or to be understood. It is easier than the word "queue". Non-speaking English person will try to guess the meaning of "stand in line" by translating into his/her first language word by word. Conversely although the word "queue" is only one word but it is not so easy to memorize and understand it.

What is the easiest to memorize? Queue or Stand in Line?
